Ok all, Hoplites from day one have been a problem and the only way to use them effectively in game when fighting other hoplites is to follow these house rules:
1. Do NOT activate "Hoplite Wall" prior to the start of a battle! This will cause the opposing hoplites to go into some crazy formations prior to combat!
2. When the opposing Hoplites are in front of you at range to commence combat press attack then switch to "Hoplite wall" ability.
And that's all you need to do! this is specifically for Hoplite Vs Hoplite combat only as you know CA (developer) never repaired this in game and this has been busted since day one!! This is the only feasible way around the problem and you will enjoy some nice combat if you follow the above. Attached screens of Hoplites in action:
